Brewery Insights: 1554 isn’t a porter, stout, or bock. It’s a throwback beer formally called a zwert style, which is the Flemish term for black. 1554 offers specialty dark malts, licorice root and European lager yeasts in the brewing process.
Review
Overall Score: 3.7
1554 has a deep, dark appearance, similar to a bock. The brewing process and darker colors make this a unique beer. Unfortunately, the flavors are closer in taste to a dog’s asshole than a delicious brown ale or bock. The zwert brewing process was nearly lost, and we know why. New Belgium should’ve never revived it; some things are meant to go away forever and never come back, and this is one of those things. It’s like the dark ages, no one is clamoring for the return of economic and intellectual deterioration. To ensure zwert beers never make a comeback, we’re asking all Degenerates to never buy this beer. Cheers to our collective power and you’re welcome we took the bullet on this one.
