Review
Nose: Bulleit has a stronger smell than most whiskeys, especially given the price and proof. It’s been awhile since I consumed Bulleit at the time of the review and I’m impressed by the strong whiskey notes. The scent has a bit of sweetness with some stronger whiskey tones. There’s nothing crazy, but it’s above average.
Palate: Bulleit Bourbon is the first whiskey that caught my attention and started my whiskey craze when I was poor and stupid; weird comment, so let me explain. My whiskey journey began with old fashioned cocktails before my wiser and more handsome friends suggested whiskey neat. Bulleit was the first whiskey I enjoyed neat and on ice. The other stipulation was I was in my early 20’s and making life decisions at the liquor store. $30 doesn’t go far for a great tasting bourbon, but there are a few gems out there; Bulleit is one of them. The 90 proof distilling is a requirement for better tasting whiskeys and Bulleit Bourbon comes through with low heat and moderately, complex flavors. This a great combination for new whiskey drinkers seeking a good bourbon at an affordable price. More experienced whiskey drinkers will appreciate Bulleit as a common go-to when bars have a limited selection.
Finish: The finish is light with limited burn; however, the complexity of the whiskey is noticed for a few seconds. The great flavors separate it from competitors at the same price. In comparison to all bourbons, there is little special about Bulleit, but there is nothing wrong with it either, which makes it an easy selection for a wide audience. Bulleit is like most marriages – it’s the best you can do, so you find a way to make it work.
Rating
Overall Score: 6.4 (score reflects taste and price)
Bulleit Bourbon is a smooth tasting whiskey with low heat and rich, complex flavors. This bourbon is a top recommendation for new whiskey drinkers or when you’re at a bar that doesn’t have their shit together and choices are limited. Bulleit always comes through with a reliable palate and great taste at a low price.
Degenerate Discussion
Bulleit Bourbon is the ultimate middle class luxury. You begin drinking Bulleit when you finally stop ordering well whiskeys like a piece of shit college kid (we’ve all been there). For some, it takes longer to part ways with well whiskey if Uncle Sam is still bending them over with student loans, which can’t be avoided even in bankruptcy. Student loans will stay with you longer than herpes from a stripper in Vegas. For clarification, Bulleit is above the white trash middle class that the Conners exemplify in the sitcom Roseanne. Bulleit Bourbon is the bottle the Jeffersons snagged when they were movin’ on up to the east side, and the same one I grabbed when I was climbing out of debt. It’s a great tasting, affordable bourbon that everyone can enjoy. Cheers Degenerates!
