Review

Nose: The nose is on point with the 90 proof distilling, but there’s character in this whiskey. You notice subtle tasting notes making the smell not a complete waste. The alcohol scent is muted from extended aging, which is a minimum of 10 years. The appearance is a deep copper, which is derived from the barrel.

Palate: This is an amazing 90 proof whiskey. The single barreling leads to craftsmanship as the distiller was selective with the mash bill and maturation. It has a good mouthfeel, with slight thickness in the liquid. This adds to the complexity as you pick up diverse flavors that are exceptional and unique. The heat is moderate, but it’s still beyond what you expected based on the proof. This whiskey checks all the boxes and deserves the appreciation it receives.

Finish: The finish is wonderful with full-bodied flavors. The taste starts immediately and continues for a few seconds, before dissipating in a rich and smooth finish. This isn’t a bold whiskey, but it’s easy to say everyone will enjoy this bottle.

Rating

Overall Score: 8.0 (score reflects taste and price)

Eagle Rare 10 offers incredible value for $38 with extended maturation and single barrel processing. Russell’s Reserve 10 Year offers the same features, but it doesn’t compare to Eagle Rare in flavor or complexity. This bottle deserves the cult following its developed over the years. Buffalo Trace continues to bring the best whiskeys to market. Drizly is the best way to find this bottle as you won’t see it at larger liquor stores.

Degenerate Discussion

Eagle rare is one of the few bottles that can carry the national bird on the bottle and do it justice. Unfortunately, Americans can’t get justice with all the dipshits we vote into office, regardless of partisanship. Rather than get political (waste of time), we’ll focus on the fact that most nations and American states have a designated bird that represents them. Having a national bird is as pointless as buying a Pet Rock in a fucking box for $3.95. Cool fact, the Pet Rock inventor, Gary Dahl, sold more than 5 million rocks and made over $15 million. I bet if we asked Gary, even he would still tell us a national bird is stupid idea…getting back to whiskey, Eagle Rare is a phenomenal value and a bottle every whiskey drinker should own. Grab a bottle and let’s cheers to the Pet Rock and Degenerates!
