The long running Maximus IPA received a makeover in 2021 as the brewery introduced Maximus Colossal IPA. Colossal increases the ABV from 8.2% to 9.0%. Maximus has always been described as the brewery’s IPA ‘on steroids’ due to the elevated ABV and higher IBU. This review focuses on the original Maximus IPA, which is 8.2%.
Review
Overall Score: 5.4
Maximus has a medium color that leaves you guessing what to expect. The flavors match the color as the experience is pretty average. This is a drinkable IPA that leans into the west coast style of California beers. Maximus is a decent option for a higher ABV IPA, but most consumers are seeking bolder, hoppier flavors at this percentage. This is a good choice when you have a limited selection (i.e. small store/town), but a beer to avoid if the options are abundant. Lagunitas is a highly profitable brewery as they turned craft beer into a domestic, but you also lose flavor and personality with higher production volume. You get what you expect in this beer.
