Review
Nose: The nose is strong from the whiskey’s proof and rye mash bill. You smell various whiskey tones and potential flavors before your first sip. It’s a good smell and solid appearance, which serve as a nice welcome.
Palate: Pikesville Rye quickly brings it with strong flavors and medium to high heat. The bold, spicy notes of the whiskey are on display from the rye grain, but the palate is decently complex. Pikesville leverages low rye (51%) and high corn (39%) in the mash bill to create a powerful but balanced experience. The decision to use more corn is a good one due to the high proof (110) and shorter aging (6). Heaven Hill is a great distillery (see Elijah Craig & Heaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond) and Pikesville Rye is a favorite in the whiskey community. It deserves the accolades it receives and is highly recommended for an amazing rye and should be included in all collections.
Finish: The finish is moderate, but complex. The heat and spiciness are moderate for a rye, but you get additional bourbon flavors that add to the complexity (that 39% corn). Pikesville offers an expensive experience at an approachable price, which makes it a common bottle in any collection.
Rating
Overall Score: 8.6 (score reflects taste and price)
Pikesville Rye is distilled at 110 proof, similar to a cask strength whiskey. It leverages its high proof distilling to immediately bring bold flavors to your palate and offer an extended finish. Pikesville is commonly rated as a top rye whiskey due to flavor and price, and we have no objections! This rye whiskey can be enjoyed neat, on ice, or even sneak into a cocktail if you don’t mind the $50 price.
Degenerate Discussion
Value should be the top consideration when making a purchasing decision. Often, we trick ourselves into believing items with higher prices arbitrarily offer more value. This simply isn’t the case. Take Angel’s Envy for example, it’s a shitty whiskey with a douchey look and $50 price. Going outside of the whiskey world, Gucci clothes are worthless and everyone is better off grabbing clothes at Kohl’s. The reason this is relevant is to inform you Pikesville Rye provides phenomenal value at a generous price for what you receive. Every Degenerate should have this in their collection just like something they regret doing while intoxicated (thousands of things for us). Pikesville is a no-brainer purchase; cheers Degenerates!
