Review

Nose: The nose is light with subtle scotch scents. The color of the whisky is darker than most scotches, which is a nod to the double cask finish. Little stands out in the smell, but it has a good appearance.

Palate: The initial sip is very smooth with strong malt flavors from the grain. The flavor profile begins simple and becomes more complex with time. The double cask finish gives the scotch added character to stand out compared to other bottles. Consumers will appreciate the double cask finish, which brings oak and sherry flavors to this single malt. The 12 year aging mutes the heat and boldness of the whisky, but there’s a lot here that you can’t quite put your finger on. Fortunately, you’ll never see us naming random fruits and nuts to describe the taste of the drink like those lying connoisseurs.

Finish: The finish is complex and difficult to describe. It’s a special taste, but not for individuals with limited scotch experience. For those that enjoy scotch, this is a must-have bottle. We recommend it for a diverse scotch that starts smooth and builds with rich flavors. It feels expensive when you drink it, which is nice for Degenerates, as it removes us from our typical reality of being dogshit people. This is good stuff.

Rating

Overall Score: 7.7 (score reflects taste and price)

The Macallan Double Cask 12 offers a unique and difficult to describe experience. The initial flavors are smooth followed by great complexity. This single malt benefits from the barreling process, which leverages Oloroso sherry casks made from American and European oak. It gets a second trip to the barrels while sitting for 12 years, allowing it to extract flavors additional flavors into its profile. This is a great scotch for enthusiasts and collectors, but it could be overbearing for someone new to scotch (seek Monkey Shoulder in that situation).

Degenerate Discussion

The Macallan distillery must be stacked based on the confidence they have using ‘The’ in their title (yes, that was a dick reference). I never noticed it until writing this review. I mean, this scotch has some big dick features to it, so no one is arguing. However, it reminds me of the NFL players on Sunday Night Football that insist on saying THE Ohio State University. I have nothing against OSU, but let’s be honest, no one gives a shit where you went to college. Let your actions speak for your character rather than the place you to spent 3-4 years (and $100,000 without scholarships). For the majority of us, we didn’t play football and college was just a place we went to drink and party. I didn’t even attend my own graduation; that’s how little I cared. If Nebraska figures out who I am, please tell your call center to stop reaching out to me for donations. I’m never giving you a dollar…but, I will give The Macallan my money for their great scotch. Cheers Degenerates!
