Brewery Insights: Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA provides bolder flavors that are hop forward, balanced by moderate haziness. I appreciate New Belgium stating Voodoo ‘is brewed with trendsetting hop and malt varieties – and served with a side of sarcasm.’ When I initially read that sentence, I called bullshit as every brewery claims the same thing, but I’m glad they found humor to poke fun at the industry.
Review
Overall Score: 6.1
Voodoo Ranger has a light color for a 9% imperial IPA, which causes immediate concern. No one buys a 9% IPA seeking moderate flavors. Fortunately, the palate doesn’t match the appearance as you’re greeted by good flavors that include pine and citrus. The profile lacks bolder flavors found in other imperial IPAs, but you taste moderate hops with a smooth finish which provide a solid experience (nothing crazy, but solid).
This is an easy drinking, somewhat delicious, 9% beer that can be enjoyed in many situations. However, be careful not to get carried away and crush a 6 pack in short time (it could be the best night or the worst night depending on who you are). Voodoo Ranger receives praise for aiding many Degenerates in tough circumstances. This is one of the few ‘good’ beers you can find at a gas station when you’re in a bind…we all have a story of desperation at the gas station, don’t be ashamed. Cheers Degenerates!
