Overall Score 7.0. This is a classic whiskey cocktail that will be enjoyed by whiskey-lovers and non-whisky-lovers.

Ingredients

Amazing Boxed Sets and Gifts Baskets That Show You Care

  • 2.0 ounces of bourbon – we recommend Elijah Craig
  • 0.5 ounces of simple syrup – we recommend Barsmith
  • Half a lemon (best to cut into wedges, a small additional wedge could be added for added tart)
  • Mint leaves (4-7 leaves to palate)

Preparation

  • Muddle the lemon juice, mint, and syrup at the bottom of a cocktail shaker
  • Fill with ice
  • Add bourbon
  • Shake until chilled (a great bartender once said the outcome of the drink is all in the shake – so shake that motherfucker)
  • Strain into a rocks glass filled with a large cube or crushed ice (note: crushed ice will reduce the strength of the drink over time)
  • Garnish with mint (clapping the mint in your hands will open up the smell/flavor of the mint)

Review

Overall Score: 7.0

The whiskey smash is a solid cocktail that combines heavy tart from lemon juice with wonderful bourbon flavors. The addition of mint is interesting and one that threw me off initially, but my palate picked up the flavors quickly, making this an immediate favorite. I enjoy a strong cocktail and love whiskey, so I recommend keeping a close eye on the amount of syrup used. It creates a smoother, more well-balanced cocktail. If you have a weaker palate and prefer sweeter flavors, you can easily vary the recipe to meet your needs. Additional lemon juice and syrup are beneficial for non-whiskey drinkers, and an egg white is a crafty touch for more experienced bartenders. Regardless of your skills and palate, throw this shit back like you’re Frank the Tank. That’s one of the few things my wife and I can agree upon. Cheers Degenerates!
