Whiskey Smash Cocktail Recipe/Review

Overall Score 7.0. This is a classic whiskey cocktail that will be enjoyed by whiskey-lovers and non-whisky-lovers. It’s one of the few things my wife and I can agree upon. If you’re looking for an easy to make, tasty cocktail, this is an easy selection.

  • 2.0 ounces of bourbon – we recommend Elijah Craig
  • 0.5 ounces of simple syrup – we recommend Barsmith
  • Half a lemon (best to cut into wedges, a small additional wedge could be added for added tart)
  • Mint leaves (4-7 leaves to palate)

  • Muddle the lemon, mint, and syrup at the bottom of a cocktail shaker
  • Fill with ice
  • Add bourbon
  • Shake until chilled (there are limited ingredients, shake longer if you want to reduce the strength of the bourbon in the drink)
  • Strain into a rocks glass filled with a large cube or crushed ice (note: crushed ice will help reduce the strength of the drink)
  • Garnish with mint (clapping the mint in your hands will open up the smell/flavor of the mint)

Overall Score: 7.0

The whiskey smash is a solid cocktail that provides heavy tart from the lemon and wonderful bourbon flavors. The addition of mint is an interesting combination and one that threw me off initially. My palate acquired the flavors quickly and made this an immediate favorite. I enjoy a strong cocktail and love whiskey, but I recommend keeping a close eye on the amount of syrup and shaking on ice for an extended amount of time or placing on crushed ice. This will make a smoother, more well-balanced drink. Fortunately, the tartness of the lemon is the only thing slowing you down from throwing these things back like Frank the Tank. Cheers Degenerates!
